How to buy software
How we can help you buy software depends on who you are, and how and where you want to use it. See
here for our pricing policy.
Who are you?
We generally work with department IT support staff and other staff responsible for buying software. This page is aimed at those staff but includes some information about buying for personal use.
How and where do you want to use software?
For department PCs
If you're a staff member responsible for buying for your department, follow these steps:
- Look up what you need in the software A-Z. This will give you the package availability and the coordinator
- If it's available via the Microsoft Select or Campus schemes, you can get it by following our ordering advice
- If it's available via our FTP service, you can download it (sometimes you'll need to complete a form for our records)
- Sometimes the software A-Z will advise you to contact the coordinator
- If it's not listed in the software A-Z, then please contact software-manager@bristol.ac.uk to help you identify the software.
For university-controlled use
"University-controlled use" normally refers to staff use of software away from their department, but still for university purposes.
For personal use
"Personal use" generally refers to staff use of software for leisure (at home) and student use of software at home (for both work and leisure). We don't buy this category of software on your behalf, but we do include some information here to help you:
- In the homeusers section, there are good lists of software aimed at students
-
You can buy Microsoft software from suppliers at educational prices. Some companies to try include:
