On Tuesday 22nd November 2011 a reception was held, hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, to celebrate the University of Bristol’s research and cultural links with Latin America and to bring together all of those within the University who have an academic or cultural interest in the region. The University has a long-standing relationship with Latin America and our links with the region are extensive and diverse – from collaborative research projects in Brazil and Chile, to student and staff exchanges in Mexico and Colombia.
Through presentations and poster displays, the event provided an opportunity to hear form colleagues about from colleagues about their research on Latin America, find out about some of the postgraduate work being undertaken at Bristol and, most importantly, to share personal and professional experiences.
Presentations were given from:
Professor Stephen Sparks, School of Earth Sciences - “Assessment of Volcanic Hazards & Risk in Latin America”
Dr Joanna Crow, Department of Hispanic, Portuguese & Latin American Studies - “Complex, Creative Negotiations: The Mapuche People & the State in Modern Chile”
Goya Wilson Vasquez, PhD Student, Graduate School of Education - “From my troubles with testimonio to troubling testimonio”
Professor George Davey Smith, School of Social & Community Medicine - “Trajectories of Health in Pelotas and Bristol”.
