   What causes ALS?

Abstract

ALS, also known as MND is a neurodegenerative disease of the voluntary motor system resulting in paralysis and death from respiratory failure within 3 years of onset. There is a genetic component, but identifying environmental factors has proven more difficult. Large scale population registers allied with international collaborative genetic studies have advanced the field and allowed the development of new models of disease causation and progression. Risk factors for ALS, and factors that modify the clinical course of the disease are important for the development of therapeutic targets.

Biography

Ammar Al-Chalabi is Professor of Neurology and Complex Disease Genetics at King’s College London, and Director of the King’s MND Care and Research Centre. His research team is focused on identifying risk and modifying factors for ALS. This year he was awarded the Sheila Essey Prize for ALS Research from the American Academy of Neurology.
