Abstract

The NJR was established in 2003 with the aim of monitoring the performance of hip and knee implants following the debacle of the 3M Capital hip. The 3M Capital hip was implanted in a large number of patients and then failed at unacceptably high rates. Since 2003 over 2 million joint replacements have been recorded in the Registry. The Musculoskeletal Research Unit at the University of Bristol have the contract to analyse the data. Specifically we produce the Annual Report, identify outlier units, surgeons and implants and undertake commissioned research. Headline findings have been the high failure rates of stemmed metal-on-metal implants and hip resurfacing, as well as the marked decrease in post-operative mortality (50% reduction in 10 years) following both hip and knee replacement. Our findings are changing the practice of arthroplasty world-wide, but we feel this database is still underutilised and would welcome thoughts on how the database could be used.
