The University of Bristol LGBT+ Staff Network is there to support the needs of LGBT+ staff and help to raise awareness and give advice and support to all staff at the University. The network, in conjunction with the EDI Team at the University are doing what they can to enable LGBT+ staff to be themselves at work

I would not have been able to achieve what I have in my career to date without the support, advice and encouragement of LGBT colleagues – both current and previous. There are times when it’s been tough and I’ve had to be brave in promoting my sexuality as a gay man to help the organisations I’ve worked for to take some big steps forward to both recognise and celebrate their LGBT+ communities. I don’t think that I could have done this without the support and encouragement of LGBT+ colleagues
My name is Basu Chakrabarty and I identify as a queer individual, who is an Aussie (Australian), with an Indian background. I am a postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of Physiology, Pharmacology & Neuroscience. I moved to Bristol in January 2016. I am the Social and Pride Representative of the University of Bristol LGBT+ Staff Network.
I'm Anna and I’m a Student Administrator in the School of Mathematics. It was in Bristol I discovered that I am bisexual and finding my 'word' to describe my sexuality has opened up a new search for my identity.

My name is Suzanne Doyle and I am the Executive Manager at Bristol SU. I am one of the Co-Chairs of the LGBT+ Staff Network (which I have been since Jan 2016) which is growing in strength and numbers. I won a “Wonderful Women Award” in 2018 and been awarded “The Most Inspiring Individual of the Year 2017” as part of the National centre for Diversity Awards.
My name is Paula Coonerty, and I am the Academic Registrar and Director of Education Services at the University. This is a role I have held for five years. Before that I was Faculty Manager in the Arts Faculty. I am open about being gay at Bristol, a decision I made consciously when I was recruited. I value the contrast to previous workplaces, and my ability to be open about who I am. This means there is no dissonance between home and work life. I have never experienced difficulties at work, beyond needing to come out in the face of heterosexism. I don’t have a singular role model, but was very proud of Ireland’s popular vote for gay marriage - it’s a very different country to the one I left in the mid-nineties.
