LGBT+ in the Workplace



We are proud to be part of the Stonewall Diversity Champions programme, the leading employers' programme for ensuring all lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) staff are accepted without exception in the workplace.

We take part in the Workplace Equality Index Benchmarking Survey enabling us to measure our progress on LGBT+ inclusion in the workplace. The structure of the Index encourages people from a range of departments (not just equality and diversity leads) to get involved in LGBT+ work, ensuring that LGBT+ inclusion is embedded right across our organisation.

Initiatives and activity

Rainbow Lanyards Campaign

As part of our commitment to LGBT+ equality, we introduced rainbow lanyards to serve as a visible reminder of the individual worth, value and equality of each person who belongs to the University, inclusive of students and staff who identify as LGBT+. It also serves as a reminder to those outside the University community that the diversity of our staff can only be an asset and is something to be recognised and celebrated.

LGBT+ Glossary

Working with our LGBT+ Staff Network and LGBT+ Student Society we have also developed a brief guide to common terms used in writing about LGBT+ communities and subjects.

LGBT+ Training 

We are raising awareness through the provision of LGBT+ 101 workshops and Trans training from Gendered Intelligence

Bristol Pride

We are proud to sponsor and support the annual Bristol Pride festival, taking part in the parade. We also arrange for one of our iconic buildings to be lit in rainbow colours to mark this occasion. Our work in this area was recognised in 2016 when we were named Best Employer and in 2018 for the Best Expo Stall at the Bristol Pride Awards ceremony.

Bristol Trans Support Pledge

In July 2018 we joined with other organisations, community groups and individuals to give full backing to a city-wide pledge to support the local trans community.
