Mr Stephen Gray

Role

My work involves digital research and cultural heritage collections. My emphasis is on cataloging, standards, interoperability, digital preservation and new ways to deliver content. I work with museums, archives, libraries and HE institutions.

Much of my time is currently spent on fixed-term projects like CAiRO and data.bris or offering consultancy. I recently co-authored a new digital best practice guide for the Heritage Lottery Fund.

I'm also a research fellow with the UOB Faculty of Arts.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

After finishing an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art I went on to complete a Preventive Conservation MA with Northumbria University, where my focus was on digital and media collections. I then achieved a PGCE in post-compulsory education before beginning my MSc in Information Management at the University of Aberystwyth.

My previous work includes: technical lead for digitising the National Review of Live Arts video archive, multimedia archiving consultant for the JISC Images for Education project and working with the both Oxford and Cambridge libraries to extend existing best practice to multimedia content. I've also undertaken consultancy for the Open University and have maintained contact with the Tate gallery since leaving Tate Liverpool in 2006.

Interests

As a parallel acivity, I make experimental film works which explore our relationship to places, these are delivered via film festival or gallery installation. One of these was nominated for a BIFA in 2006 and another awarded a Red Mansion residency in China in 2003. My work formed part of the John Martin Exhibiton at Tate Britain in 2011.

I have a great interest in writers of ghostly 19th century fiction and run an M.R. James site, just for fun.
