IAS Benjamin Meaker Visiting Professor: Karen Kohfeld, Simon Fraser University, Canada

1st January - 30th April 2013

Dr Karen Kohfeld is an assistant professor and Canada Research Chair in Climate, Resources, and Global Change in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.

She is intere sted in understanding natural variability and biogeochemical linkages in the ocean and climate system, in order to better assess earth’s response to global change.

She is well-known for her work in compiling paleo-environmental databases that are used to evaluate the ability of earth system models to simulate climate change. Her Dust Indicators and Records of Terrestrial and MArine Paleo-Environments (DIRTMAP) database has been used in over 15 publications evaluating changes in atmospheric dust concentrations, and their impact on climate and ocean productivity.

She has published more than 30 research articles and book chapters, co-convened 8 conference sessions and workshops, and given 65 presentations (18 of which were invited) at international conferences and workshops.

Her current research focuses on the ocean carbon cycle, the influence of climate and land surface conditions on atmospheric dust, and understanding changes in extreme weather conditions in the Pacific Northwest.
