Job Descriptions:

Heads of school

All Heads of School, whose role is at Professorial level, regardless of grade/range, will be paid a salary supplement to recognise their additional leadership role and broader contribution to the organisation.

There will be a single level of supplement, set at the equivalent of 5 Grade M spine points.  The value of the supplement will be reviewed each year, with the expectation of it being increased in line with annual pay awards.

On standing down at the end of their full term, Heads’ core salaries will normally be enhanced by two spine points, to recognise their continuing value to the university, and to recognise the impact of reduced opportunity to pursue their academic career during their time as Head.   Where the role-holder is currently below professorial level the procedure described below shall apply.

Heads of School whose substantive role is graded below Grade M will receive an initial supplement calculated to ensure that the total salary equals the bottom spine point of Range 2, in line with the evaluated level of the role.  This supplement will be subject to review, based on performance in the role.  On standing down from office at the end of their term, a pensionable supplement equivalent to 2 spine points will be consolidated in the individual’s salary.

Research Director/Education Director

Holders of these will be paid a salary supplement to recognise their leadership role and broader contribution to the organisation.  The supplement will be set at the equivalent of 3 Grade M spine points.  In any event, Research Directors (PDF, 157kB) and Education Directors (PDF, 64kB) should receive no less than the equivalent of the bottom spine point of Grade M, Range 1, in line with the evaluated level of the role.  The value of the supplement will be reviewed each year, with the expectation of it being increased in line with annual pay awards.  There will be no consolidation when the role-holder stands down (with the exception of role-holders below professorial level - see below).

Role-holders below professorial level

The following procedure shall apply to role-holders who:

Other roles e.g. Deputy Head (Research) and (Teaching); Programme Leader; Research Leader; Faculty Admissions Tutors; Widening Participation Co-ordinators, etc

It is recognised that these roles are variable in size and degree of responsibility.  Where the skills and experience required are consistent with the role profile level or range descriptor of the individual, there will be no additional payment, although modification of workload may be appropriate.

However, there may occasionally arise exceptional cases, and in such cases (where the specified criteria are met), it may be appropriate to pay a supplement.

In determining whether the case is exceptional, the following criteria and procedure will apply:

Amount of supplement

The expectation will be that where any such supplement is, exceptionally, approved it will be to the value of one Grade M spine point, or a proportion thereof.  The proportion will be determined by reference to the demands of the role, the scope and nature of impact, the complexity and the requirement for specialist skills, knowledge, experience.

Procedure

Where the Dean believes that the additional responsibilities undertaken warrant recognition in the form of an Academic Leadership and Management Supplement, s/he must submit the case to the Director of Human Resources using the Academic Leadership and Management Pay Supplement Application Form (Office document, 54kB) provided, detailing how the role and role-holder meet the essential criteria and any additional indicators (as outlined above).   The case must also include an indication of the size of supplement being requested, outlining the reasons for the amount requested.

The request must also indicate whether the payment is intended to remain linked to the role until such time as the Dean determines it should be reviewed; or whether it is being requested on a more personal basis and will cease (or be requested again) when the role-holder steps down from the additional role.

The start date and, where known, the end date of the payment should be stated.

It should be noted that roles with similar titles across faculties may have different eligibility for any such allowance, dependent upon the circumstances prevailing and/or the specific job description.
