The University has developed its own job evaluation scheme, the University of Bristol Job Evaluation Scheme, or UBJES. This is based on a very well established job evaluation method developed by a company called the Hay Group.
Support staff roles are evaluated by job evaluation panels either applying the UBJES methodology directly to the job description or by matching the job description to one of the academic-related role profiles (generic job descriptions which have themselves been scored using the UBJES methodology).
Where a manager is recruiting to a brand new role, or where a vacant role has been restructured or changed substantially, the Procedure for New Role Evaluations should be followed.
Where an individual or their manager believes that there have been substantive and material changes to a role such that this could affect the grade, the Procedure for Re-evaluations should be followed.
As we move towards Support Process Review (SPR) implementation it has been decided that, with effect from Monday 28th June 2010, the University will implement a slightly revised process for grade re-evaluations.
From that date, all requests for grade re-evaluations will be reviewed by Personnel Services to assess whether the role in question is likely to be changed in any way by SPR.
Where the role is likely to be changed, re-evaluation may not be permitted pending implementation of SPR. We are taking this step to ensure that grades remain reasonably stable during the period when we are finalising new structures and planning for the movement of staff to the new structures.
The decision on whether any re-evaluation should progress will be taken by Personnel Services, in consultation with the line manager and, where appropriate, the relevant future Process Owner.
Once SPR implementation is complete the grade re-evaluation process will revert to normal.
