My main field of study is Chinese Modern history, especially the late Qing era. In the last years I have been concentrating my research on the Sino-German relations with special attention on the military sphere.
I have joined Historical Studies for three years from 1st September 2008 as a Post-Doctoral research Associate funded by the 'Colonialism in Comparative Perspective: Tianjin Under 9 Flags' project. Within the Tianjin project I will be researching the life and career of Gustav Detring, a senior official with the Chinese Customs Service, based in Tianjin, who was a crucial foreign advisor to Viceroy Li Hongzhang, a key figure in late Qing politics. I will also be responsible for research on the history of the German concession in Tianjin.
I have secured my PhD in 2003 at Hamburg, with a thesis on 'The German Yangtze Patrol' and previously have been working as Research Fellow at the Prussian State Archives in a project about the relations between Prusso-Germany and China in cooperation with the Free University Berlin, the First Historical Archives in Peking and the Peking University. I have taught at Hamburg and Oldenburg universities. I will mostly be based in Berlin, but will be in Bristol regularly.
