Research interests

My main interest is the historical narrative of the First Crusade, which grew from my involvement in the AHRC funded 'Robert the Monk' project originally led by Professor Marcus Bull, now under the supervision of Brendan Smith.

My work is currently focused on a history of the First Crusade written in the very early twelfth century by Baldric, abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Bourgueil in the Loire Valley. I completed a new edition of this text, entitled Historia Ierosolimitana, as part of my successful doctoral thesis. I am now working on translating it into English, examining themes within it of family ties, community and revenge and preparing the Latin text and critical analysis for publication. I am a seminar tutor for the Introduction to Medieval History course.
