The MA in History offers you a chance to explore a variety of approaches to history: political, cultural, social, economic and intellectual, across a broad chronological range. It is designed to develop and test your ability to carry out investigations into primary sources, to refine your analytical and theoretical skills, and to deepen and broaden your knowledge of the past.
The MA offers a high degree of choice. You may choose to specialise in one of the following areas, representing the key strengths of the department.
Alternatively, you may choose not to specialise, to obtain a broad sense of historical subjects, themes, debates and methodologies.
The MA comprises a taught element, of six units, delivered through seminars, and a research element, the dissertation. For the dissertation component of the MA, you have the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of individual research, engaging with primary sources under the supervision of a dedicated academic adviser.
