Keil Doctoral Scholarship, 2013

The Department is offering a doctoral scholarship for three years subject to satisfactory progress. The scholarship is funded in honour of Dr Ian Keil, a former student.

Cabot Project schools conference a success

On 20 March, the Cabot Project Schools Group ran its first 'conference' involving four local secondary schools. This involved fifty selected children, aged 12-13. Their presentations discussed the outcomes of group research projects the children had conducted over the previous six weeks, under the supervision of a dozen History undergraduates from the University of Bristol.

Hatters' Trail to open

Dr Chris Heal, who completed his thesis in the Department last summer, has been awarded a grant by South Gloucestershire Council to set-up a Hatters’ Trail. This heritage trail is based on Chris' work on the local hatting industry.

The Department of History's  Past Matters programme is now available online. This year's programme will include public lectures by Prof Mary Beard, Prof Robert Bickers and Prof Brendan Simms.

Ian Wei short-listed for History Today prize

Ian Wei has been short-listed for The Longman / History Today Book of the Year Prize for 2013. This is for his monograph Intellectual Culture in Medieval Paris (CUP, 2012).

Jonathan Saha publishes in Past & Present

Dr Jonathan Saha has just published an article in Past & Present, one of world’s leading history journals. The article reconsiders the nature of ‘the rule of law’ in colonial contexts.
