China Coast Family History

At this site we are developing a number of hints for locating details about foreign residents in the Chinese treaty ports (excluding Hong Kong). As well as pointing to the location of various public records (probate details, marriage, birth and death registers) it contains a number of cemetery lists and other lists culled from public records and printed sources. Our Union Cemetery database includes a search facility -- follow the link for Shanghai under Places or Burial list under General. The Probate link under General will take you to a search facility in our Probate database of references to the Shanghai Supreme Court probate files held at The National Archives (PRO). (NB: These are the file numbers. You should consult the National Archives directly about accessing the files).

New 2011: We have been adding scanned extracts of nineteenth-century directories. New 2012: We have added some lists of wartime civilian internees in Shanghai.

These lists are far from definitive. I would be happy to receive further lists, and suggestions for links. Robert Bickers
