Our expertise covers a wide range of subjects in Hispanic, Latin American, Portuguese and Catalan culture and history, and we enjoy a high-profile reputation at national and international level for our teaching and research.
After English, Spanish is the most widely spoken of the world’s European languages and is the second language of the USA. Portuguese is the language of Brazil, Latin America’s largest country and an emerging global economy, as well as being spoken in five African countries and parts of Asia. Catalan is an important regional language spoken on the eastern coast of Spain. There are well-established exchange links with universities in Spain and Portugal, as well as with several universities in Latin America, giving a very cosmopolitan atmosphere to the Department.
Postgraduate Study
Staff contribute to the core units on the MA programmes in European Literatures and in Modern Languages, while also offering specialist units which enable students to follow an Iberian and/or Latin American pathway.
In addition to these programmes, there will be an MA programme in Latin American History available from October 2010.
We can also offer supervision for doctoral research, with research clusters in the fields of Modern Spanish Literature, Culture and Political History from the Eighteenth Century through to the Present, and Latin American Literature, Cultural Studies and History. In addition, we have individual expertise in Medieval Iberian Studies, and in Postcolonial Lusophone Studies. Research in this Department feeds into the wider Faculty Centres for Medieval Studies, and the Centre for the Study of Colonial and Postcolonial Societies. Further information is available for those interested in funding opportunities for doctoral research in Iberian and Latin American Studies in 2010/11
