Research strategy

Our mission is to:

  • Gain a fundamental understanding of the cardiovascular system in health and disease
  • Use this knowledge to benefit our patients
  • Train the next generation of leading scientists and academic clinicians
  • Act as a centre for public engagement
  • Be a source of advice for patients and policy makers

Uniquely we have the combination of:

  • NIHR funded Biomedical Research Unit for Cardiovascular Disease
  • The top academic cardiac surgery unit in the UK
  • State-of the art Bristol Heart Institute Hospital
  • Internationally outstanding fundamental research in:
    • Vascular biology and atherothrombosis
    • Cardiac biology: electrophysiology and arrhythmias, excitation-contraction coupling, metabolism and mitochondrial function
    • Cardiovascular regeneration
    • cardiac physiology and metabolism
    • Hypertension
    • Genetics, epigenetics and epidemiology of cardiovascular disease
  • Cutting edge research facilities, for example in imaging  (CRIC)

Our priorities for 2014 - 2018 are to:

  • Develop seamless translational research, from molecule to man, integrating our outstanding fundamental science and clinical expertise to develop new therapeutic approaches that benefit patients
  • Ensure that the outstanding research environment offered by the University of Bristol and collaborative opportunities between disciplines within Bristol and beyond are used to benefit cardiovascular research
  • Continue to develop cutting edge technologies that underpin and benefit research and clinical practice
  • Train the next generation of leading cardiovascular scientists and clinical academics

Public Bristol CardioVascular Strategy

Outstanding research. World-class health outcomes.
