Dr Joseph Hartland

Tutorial Room 2, Centre for Applied Anatomy, Southwell Street, Bristol, BS2 8EJ

Open to all staff in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Bristol who are interested in undertaking the scholarship of teaching and learning in the health sciences.

Session delivered by Dr Joseph Hartland.

This session is aimed at anyone who wants to broaden their understanding of the educational inequalities that exist within HE, such as the BME Awards Gap, and through the lens of experiential case studies consider the impact that discrimination and bias can have on a student’s educational experience.

This workshop will help you to:

  • Raise awareness amongst staff about ways in which discrimination against students from groups with protected characteristics occurs
  • Develop skills that allow comfortable critical self-reflection on staff members own unconscious bias and the role they play in both contributing to and preventing problematic behaviours
  • Help staff to identify, listen to and appreciate the narrative of a student experiencing discrimination
  • Develop skills to support students who receive discriminatory behaviour from patients, staff or fellow students
  • Consider how this learning can be taken back to the different departments covered by the event to support an open dialogue about these issues

Our conversation will be grounded in educational theory, with a focus on social learning theories and how to not work from a deficit model.

Free for staff to attend but Eventbrite booking required for numbers management. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Part of a series of sessions organised by the Centre for Health Sciences Education.
