School and Division Climate Action Plans

Climate Action Plans at the University of Bristol

The Climate Action Plan (CAPs) initiative is one of the ways the University is working to reduce its carbon emissions in response to the climate and ecological emergency. A climate action plan allows each school and division to identify the actions specific to them that will lead to the greatest carbon reduction and impact. Currently, over 1000 individual actions have been committed to across the University.

We are committed to the University’s pledge to reach net zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions from our buildings by 2030. From the teaching and research that takes place in our academic schools, to the ways in which we optimise space across our organisation, it is critical that each School and Professional Services Division plays their part. The Climate Action Plan initiative is at the heart of the effort, bringing together staff and students, and allowing for the identification of shared challenges and consideration of unique opportunities to reduce carbon emissions across the University.

How does the CAP process work?

Each department appoints a CAP Co-ordinator who is responsible for using the online planning tool to firstly develop a plan, and then to gather evidence of action. The CAP coordinator is not responsible for delivery; they simply coordinate the departmental response.

To support the CAP coordinator, many schools and departments have formed CAP coordinating groups, which include academic and professional services staff, as well as students. Additional support is available from the Sustainability Team in the form of regular drop-in clinics, faculty-level progress meetings, and guidance and resources which can be accessed via the CAP Coordinators SharePoint site

Once a department has produced its CAP, it must be signed off by the Departmental Head and submitted to the Sustainability Team for review. Plans will then be reviewed on an annual basis, and progress will be reported upwards to the Sustainability Monitoring and Implementation Group.
