Graduation postponement FAQs

We have taken the difficult decision to postpone our graduation ceremonies until a later date. In the meantime, virtual celebration events will be held during July.

The Examination Board will still meet to confirm that you have met the criteria to be awarded your degree. This will take place for undergraduate finalists during July and during September (for students who need to defer some assessments).

We have answered some questions you might have.

When will my degree be awarded?

The date of your award is when University Exam Boards meet and agree you have met the required criteria for the award of your degree.

What is the difference between my ‘award’ and ‘graduation’?

Your award is when a Board of Examiners confirm that you have met the criteria to be awarded your degree and the date of this meeting is the date which will appear on your certificate.

This is different to your ‘graduation’ date which relates to the ceremonial aspect where your degree is conferred in a degree ceremony.

When will I receive my certificate or transcript?

Education Services colleagues are working hard to ensure you have your certificate as soon as possible and these should be posted out as a 'signed for' delivery during August, provided you have no outstanding tuition fees or bench fees by 24 July 2020.

Will I still be able to graduate in the future?

We have taken the difficult decision to postpone our graduation ceremonies. We are working hard to schedule alternative gatherings when possible, and we thank everyone for their understanding. We will be in touch across the next few weeks with further information.

When will a decision be made as to when Graduation will take place?

We continue to monitor the situation closely and to follow the UK government guidelines to help combat the spread of the virus. When the restrictions change, and it is safe to do so (full all those involved) we can start to plan for future graduation celebrations.

At this stage, we have no way of knowing when the current Coronavirus pandemic will ease to allow us to make definite plans. We will update you on this once we are able to make revised plans for graduation.

I have already booked my travel arrangements. Will the University reimburse me?

Unfortunately, the University is unable to reimburse travel costs. We advise you to contact your travel company and/or travel insurance provider.

If I have previously deferred from a previous congregation, will I still be able to attend when the congregation is rearranged?

Yes, the University will offer you a place at a ceremony in the future.

What if I cannot attend Bristol at the time my ceremony is rescheduled to?

You will have the option to defer your graduation to a degree congregation at a later date in the usual way.
