Programme: Work and teach abroad with Gotoco
Dates:  1-2 months between June and August 2024

Programme details

You will be working for one month on projects teaching English at summer camps and language centres. Meanwhile, you can study on Gotoco's Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL 120 hours) programme and put your new skills to use teaching English at a summer camp.

The programme will include:

  • earning a TEFL certificate that you can use to work abroad in future
  • gaining global work experience teaching at summer camps across Europe
  • developing employability skills
  • immersing yourself in a different culture
  • meeting like-minded people

Location

You can apply for Turing funding for Gotoco programmes in Europe (Germany, Romania, Poland and Spain) or ChinaYou are not guaranteed your first choice of destination, as it is subject to availability and is a competitive process.

Eligibility

To apply for Turing funding to support you on this programme, you must:

  • be a full-time undergraduate student at the University of Bristol not in your final year

If you are not eligible to apply for Turing funding, you can still apply directly to Gotoco to join a programme.

Language requirements

You do not need to be a 'native' speaker of English for this programme. However, you will need to pass a certain level of English and places for 'non-native' speakers may be limited. Gotoco encourages everyone to apply.

Academic requirements

You do not need to meet any academic requirements to take part in this programme.

Costs

You will need to pay a refundable deposit of £200 that you will get back when you complete the programme. £100 is refunded upon completion of the TEFL certificate. £100 is refunded on completion of the feedback form.

You will also need to pay a programme fee of £480 which covers:

  • TEFL training and certification
  • accommodation and meals throughout the camp
  • accommodation during the post-programme trip
  • in-country support

You will need to organise and pay for all other costs, including:

  • return international flights or interrail train tickets
  • visa, if required
  • DBS check (for UK-based participants)
  • personal spending

Funding

Turing funding

The Turing Scheme is a UK government initiative. There are two grant rates available:

Turing grant rate A

Cost of living grant: £480 for 4 weeks.

Eligibility: All undergraduate students not in their final year.

Turing grant rate B 

  • cost of living grant:: £590 for 4 weeks. 
  • travel grant: based on distance from Bristol to destination between (£250 Europe or £905 China)

Eligibility: Home undergraduate students, not in their final year, who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Your household income is under £42,875
    • this includes recipients of the Access to Bristol / Bristol Scholars bursary, OR you receive Universal Credit; note that you must be the recipient, not a partner or family member
  • you are care-experienced 
  • you have caring responsibilities
  • you are an estranged student 
  • you are a refugee or asylum seeker
  • you are a mature student
  • your ethnicity is listed under Asian or Asian British; Black, Black British, Caribbean or African; Mixed or multiple ethnic groups; or the Other ethnic group catergory on the gov.uk list of ethnic groups.
  • you have a disability or special educational need. Please note that the term disability is very wide; further details of what may be considered a disability are in this link definition of disability, and this will need to be registered with Disability Services.

All criteria, including household income, will be taken from your official student record. It is your responsibility to check that the information stored is correct.

How to apply

You must apply for a place with Gotoco directly through their website. You can apply for Turing funding via the button below up until 1st February. You do not need to have a place confirmed with Gotoco in order to apply, but priority will be given to those who have registered their interest with them (e.g. have attended an information session).
