Mr Levene was born in 1946 and educated at Bradford G.S. and Oxford University (Classics), later Leeds University (German and Arabic), and Cambridge. He came to the University of Bristol in 1978 and retired in 2005. He taught a very wide range of literary topics, specialising on Austrian and nineteenth century literature.
His current interests include the history of the Old Regime in Germany and the philosophy of Nietzsche. Outside of his academic pursuits, he plays chess, visits the theatre, supports Liverpool FC and enjoys good food.
