Goethehaus

In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the Department was rewarded with a grade 5 for its strong record of academic publishing - a sign of its international standing.

Research Strengths in:

  • Mediaeval Studies
  • Literature (all periods)
  • Linguistics
  • History since 1815
  • Culture and Thought since 1945

In recent years the Department has made new appointments and broadened its range of interests to include history, thought, politics, linguistics and cultural studies alongside our established strengths in literary studies. The seven permanent members of staff teach, research and publish on these diverse fields. There are also strong areas of shared expertise, for example in drama, women's writing and gender, the Early Modern period, and post-1945 history, politics, literature and culture.
