The Master of Philosophy is a one-year programme (two years part-time) of guided study and research focusing on a topic on which you write a dissertation of 25,000 words. In addition to this guided study MPhil students will benefit from a wide-ranging training in advanced study methods to support their research and to equip them to extend their work to doctoral level if they wish. The Faculty of Arts provides modules in IT skills, information sources, critical theory and writing skills in the first half-year. The Department backs this up with a series of tailor-made seminars in study skills for Germanists, covering such areas as use of editions, use of electronic databases, reading handwritten Fraktur, handling manuscripts, academic writing and presentation skills. These will be geared to the needs of students and provide lively and wide-ranging contacts between postgraduates and members of staff.
These are research degrees normally involving two or three years' full-time study. The MLitt dissertation is a maximum of 50,000 words, the PhD 80,000 words. Students normally register first for the MLitt and then upgrade to a PhD when their work has progressed. The training outlined above is also available to MLitt/PhD students.
Prospective students should have at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent.
