Stable Isotope Analysis

We have established a nationally recognised non-compound specific stable isotope analysis facility that provides analytical services to both internal and external research users. High resolution and throughput stable isotope analysis in solid, gas and water samples is available upon request:

  • Stable isotope ratios of 13C, 15N, 34S, 18O and 2H in solid samples via EA-IRMS (Elementar Isoprime precisION). Sample types include: soil, sediments, plant and animal tissues, extracted collagen from bones.
  • Stable isotopes of greenhouse gases at atmospheric concentrations for 13C-CO213C-CH4, 15N-N2O and 15N-N(GHG-isoFLOW). Sample types include: atmospheric gas samples collected in the field or in incubations or equillibrated from aqcueous samples and provided in 12 mL exetainer vials.
  • Gas concentrations of methane, ethane and carbon dioxide as well as the stable carbon isotope signature of methane via cavity ring-down spectroscopy (Methane Isotope Analyser). Suitable for continuous flow through applications or discrete samples supplied in vials (minimum 30mL gas in 12mL exetainers).
  • Liquid Water Isotope analysis for δ2H, δ17O and δ18O via  Off-Axis Integrated Cavity Output Spectroscopy (LGR LWIA). Sample types include: freshwater or seawater samples, body fluids (urine, blood, saliva) following cryo-distillation sample preparation.
