"A Bristol geography degree teaches you the art of independent study... and puts you in good stead for having the confidence to argue your point as you progress through life."

Bristol pushes its students to help them reach their full potential; you’re made to analyse, to challenge your preconceived ideas and to push yourself harder intellectually than you have done before. Although these challenges seem tough at the time, it improves your ability to think critically about arguments and consider your own opinions.

I now work as an insurance claims manager. I receive reports on claims from lawyers and am constantly challenging them, as well as coming up with strategies. Bristol helped me with all these skills.

A Bristol geography degree teaches you the art of independent study (a ‘plus’ for when you reach the working world!). And, thanks to tutors who challenge you, it puts you in good stead for having the confidence to argue your point as you progress through life.

On a more personal level, leaving home and going to university also makes you grow up, become independent and form close friendships that I hope will last me for the rest of my life.

Along with the ability to work independently, confidence in your abilities is also key to being a good leader. I think listening, being personable and being able to take constructive criticism are also fundamental attributes.

By attending lectures, working closely with tutors and other students you become not only used to working as part of a team, but also learn to reconsider your opinions and take feedback, which can be critical particularly if a dissertation is involved.

Bristol graduates are well-rounded individuals. They’re intelligent, know how to work hard and to aim high in life. In my experience, they’re also affable and good fun.
