11 October 2017, 1.00 PM - 11 October 2017, 2.00 PM

Dr Ioanna Bakopoulou, School of Education

Room 1.20/21, School of Education, 35 Berkeley Square, Clifton, BS8 1JA

This event is part of the School of Education's 'Bristol Conversations in Education' seminar series.

Speaker: Dr Ioanna Bakopoulou

Using language effectively underpins many aspects of successful learning. Ioanna will present research that shows that strong oral language skills are linked to better outcomes for children and young people at school and beyond, and that disparities in language learning can affect children’s access to the curriculum and their achievement in schools. Inequalities can occur due to different opportunities in language learning environment and children’s language learning needs. To address this issue, Ioanna will defend a more supportive language learning environment in education, present results of her research from the Better Communication Research Programme, and talk about the Supporting Spoken Language in the Classroom (SSLiC) knowledge exchange research programme she currently leads on.
