Prospective Undergraduates

French is the first language of some ninety million speakers around the world from France to Canada, from North and West Africa to the Indian Ocean, from the Caribbean to Polynesia, in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. The francophone countries offer some of the most diverse and stimulating cultures for study and closer European integration makes knowledge of French language, culture and institutions both necessary and rewarding.

The Bristol French Department is a mixed and dynamic team, with international research experise which feeds directly into our teaching. Welcoming around 130 students per year at undergraduate level, we offer stimulating degree programmes covering all aspects of French Studies, giving you a thorough knowledge of present-day French, both written and spoken, opportunities for studying a wide range of topics on French literature, society, civilisation and culture and training you in the skills needed for activities that may be new to you, such as translation into French or literary criticism.

There is a student French Society run by students for students which offers a lively and varied programme of social activities, including film viewings and conversation groups.
