US loans for American students

The University of Bristol is eligible to certify loans from the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loans) and also private loans from any lenders that offer funds to US students studying outside of the United States.

The University of Bristol may certify Direct Loan applications for both Stafford loans and PLUS loans. These loans are borrowed directly from the US Federal Government, with terms and interest rates that are determined by them.

Regardless of what loan type (or combination of loans types) you choose, you may borrow up to the total cost of attendance, which includes tuition fees and living expenses, but no more.

Applicants should have applied to a degree programme at the University of Bristol and have received a formal offer of admission before applying for any loan.

Some programmes offered at University of Bristol are not eligible for Direct Loans: Programmes that lead to a certificate or any qualification other than a degree are not eligible. Programmes containing any element of distance learning and all programmes undertaken at Trinity College are also not eligible. Students applying to these programmes should fully consider how they will fund their studies without Direct Loans.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS: The University of Bristol is not eligible to certify Direct Loans for students undertaking a clinical medicine programme (MBChB). If you are an American student intending to study this degree, please fully consider how you will fund your studies without Direct Loans.
