HEFCE

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) distributes public money for teaching and research to universities and colleges. In doing so, it aims to promote high quality education and research, within a financially healthy sector. The Council also plays a role in ensuring accountability and promoting good practice.

As the funding council for higher education in England, they have a number of different roles. The HEFCE was formed, under the terms of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, to bring together all higher education in England into one funding system. HEFCE are a non-departmental public body (NDPB), which means that we work within the policy framework set by the Secretary of State for Education, but are not part of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
