During your early years there will be competing demands on your time and expectations that will pull you in different directions. We want to help you manage that, and help you produce the evidence that will enable you to quickly progress on the University's main career grade.
Following widespread consultation and feedback from staff who have attended the Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TLHE) Programme and feedback from Deans and Faculty staff, from 2008/09 we revised delivery of the TLHE programme.
These changes were designed to keep the programme aligned with institutional requirements, individual circumstances and national developments, whilst providing more faculty and discipline specific elements to complement the core generic programme.
We now run the programme in a new format beginning with a one day Induction, followed by staff booking on to half day sessions to complete other mandatory programme elements.
The initial day involves a generic introduction to the University by the Vice-Chancellor outlining what it means to teach at Bristol and the ethos of the university (world-class teaching in a research-led environment). There is then an introduction to the programme; details of the career pathways, and an outline of progression/promotion procedures and criteria and the importance of programme completion with respect to these. There are also faculty-specific elements delivered by faculty academic staff. Whilst the focus is on teaching we also emphasise the University’s expectation that in a research intensive University research must inform teaching.

Whilst the programme is mandatory, we recognise that you may come with experience of teaching elsewhere, and we will acknowledge this.
