Module 1: Small Group Teaching
Module Overview
This module is concerned primarily with teaching small groups and deals with the following areas:
- The rationale for and the nature of small group teaching.
- Different types of small group approaches.
- Small group teaching methods & techniques.
- Maximising group and individual engagement.
- Questioning skills and using student responses to assess and promote understanding.
- Planning skills for small group teaching contexts.
- Dealing with difficulties and dysfunctional groups.
- Managing on-line discussion groups.
The module is interactive and will illustrate small group approaches.
Objectives
- To extend and enhance small group teaching strategies.
- To gain experience of small group teaching methods.
- To develop and practice planning skills.
- To develop and practice skills in observing teaching.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Successful course participants will be able to demonstrate:

- use of small group teaching methods;
- management of individual and group activities;
- dealing with difficulties;
- strategies for supporting learning in small groups;
- questioning skills that promote individual and group engagement;
- skills in managing on-line discussions.
Practice-based Task and Reflective Account
Note that there is one joint reflective account for both core teaching modules (Small Group and Lecturing Skills).
The module incorporates a practice-based task that involves observations of your small group teaching and your lecturing by your mentor and a written reflection that will provide evidence (for your portfolio) of your thinking, awareness and growing competence in this area of teaching.
There is an option to do a more extended accredited assignment. Successful completion of the accredited pathway of the programme leads to a PGCertHE (60 M-level credits).
