The University of Bristol places students at the heart of its activities and is committed to providing effective personal tutoring for all students on taught programmes. It has recently updated its Regulations for Personal Tutors [pdf]. These provide regulatory advice and support for departments, personal tutors and students about how to make personal tutoring work for all involved and are intended to promote consistency in personal tutoring across the University. It is now working on revising the Guidelines into a more detailed Code of Practice.
Additional information is available in relation to Guidelines in several areas and a list of useful contacts and web links:

Staff may be interested to see an interesting and useful presentation on First year Personal Tutoring and key skills development, delivered by Dr Theo Tryfonas from the School of Engineering at the recent Learning and Teaching Exhibition. The Student Help website supports personal tutors and students. It is designed to provide answers to frequently asked questions and links to support and advice for students, and staff supporting students. It is hoped that the site will be a useful resource for tutors and tutees. Regularly updated with information on a wide range of academic and pastoral issues, the site has been publicised in Union and University campaigns since its launch in 2006/07. Departments are encouraged to link to the site from their websites, and include the logo and a description in programme handbooks. See the 'How to link to the Student Help site' page for more information. | ![]() |
The NUS has produced a new Charter on Personal Tutors, which has been developed after consultation with the sector and students. This charter aims to set out best practice for good personal tutor systems, without prescribing what individual university systems should look like. |
