The AXA Research Fund (ARF) annually grants about 30 PhD fellowships and is currently inviting applications for 2012. The University is permitted to put forward two candidates for selection this year.
These awards provide a stipend of €25,000 per annum, €1,000 per annum for direct costs and related fees paid to the host institution for three years. The ARF is open to UK, EU and Overseas candidates.
Only proposals that fall within one of the following themes set by the AXA Scientific Board are eligible for funding: Life Risks; Socio-Economic Risks; Environmental Risks. For further details please refer to the AXA PhD Application Guidelines 2012.
Applications should be e-mailed to Katherine Penry by 5 pm on Monday 27 February 2012. In addition to submitting an online application for admission to the University, candidates must provide:
- a detailed description of the proposal (no longer than 4 pages)
- an up to date CV
- two academic references, including one from their prospective PhD supervisor
Schools must also provide a supporting statement, which demonstrates how the applicant’s proposal fits with one of the AXA themes and provides evidence of outstanding research potential.
The Academic Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Sally Heslop, along with other members of University Graduate Studies Committee, will meet on 28 February 2012 to agree the nominees for submission, in accordance with the AXA selection criteria.
The two selected nominees will then need to submit their applications online via the AXA website by 29 March 2012 as set out in the guidelines above.
