University Award Recognising Support for Teaching and Learning

Definition

These awards (three) aim to recognise staff in schools, faculties and the Support Services and are awarded to individual members of, or team of, support staff who demonstrate excellence in the support of  teaching and learning activities of the School, Faculty or University.

Selection

i. Faculty Education Directors are invited to co-ordinate the nomination of one individual, or one team, to go forward to the final stage of selection. Similarly the Registrar is also invited to co-ordinate the nomination of one individual, or one team, to go forward to the final stage. The Faculty or Support Services need not nominate an individual or team for the award if: no candidates come forward, or, it is felt that the candidates do not meet the quality threshold.

ii. A sub-group of the University Education Committee, chaired by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education), will determine the three winners of the award.

Criteria for Award

Recipients of the award will have demonstrated excellence in supporting the teaching and learning activities of the School, Faculty or University. Following the presentation of an award, an individual or team may not be nominated for a further three years.

Process for Award

i. Advocates (i.e. members of University of Bristol staff who wish to nominate a colleague for an award), who will normally be the line manager of the nominee or the Head of School / Divisional Head, if different, should complete the relevant nomination form stating how the nominee meets the criteria for the award (max 1000 words).

OR

Applicants should complete the relevant nomination form stating how they meet the criteria for the award (max 1000 words).

In both cases, the statement should be evaluative, citing evidence to support their case wherever possible. The form should then be sent electronically to the Faculty Office/Registrar’s Office by the stipulated deadline.

ii. Faculties / The Registrar will determine, on the basis of the applications received, which individual or team will go forward to the University panel for consideration. Once this has been determined, the Faculty Education Director(s) / Registrar will write a statement (max 500 words) in support of the successful application. Applicants and their advocates should be informed of the outcome of this stage.

iii. Faculties / The Registrar’s Office should send an electronic copy of the completed nomination form to Mike White (m.white@bris.ac.uk cc: esu-info@bris.ac.uk) in the Education Support Unit by 9am, Wednesday 2nd March 2011. The completed nomination form should also be returned to the successful applicant.

iv. The judging panel will consider the nominations (with supporting statements) and select the three winners in relation to the criteria. Nominees will be informed by e-mail of the decision of the panel.

v. Awards will be presented to the winners at the University's Learning and Teaching Exhibition.
