Environment Week 2004
15-19th March 2004
Environment Week 2004 was a great success with events across the precinct and at Langford. The week aimed to promote environmental issues such as energy efficiency, recycling and transport. The events provided information on what the University is doing to improve its environmental performance as well as what staff and students can do to help reduce their environmental impact both at work and at home. Read on for photos and to see what went on.

ALL WEEK
Information stalls
Information stalls, covering issues such as recycling, energy efficiency and transport, will be set up in the entrances to the main buildings on the precinct. You can quiz the Energy and Environmental Management Unit (EEMU) about the University's current environmental policies, offer your own suggestions and pick up some freebies made from recycled material.
Time 8am-2pm.

- Thursday - Wills Memorial and Medical School
- Friday - Physics and Vet School, Southwell St
Environment Fair
Many local companies will be there giving information on energy efficiency, transport, alternative ways of living and fair trade food.
Time: 10am-4pm. Venue: Grass opposite Senate House.
Slogan Competition
Here's your chance to have your say. The EEMU are looking for catchy/funny/dramatic/inspirational slogans with the purpose of promoting environmental awareness at the University. Slogans could cover issues such as energy efficiency (turning off lights, PCs, equipment), waste minimisation (reduce, reuse, recycle) or transport. Prizes will be awarded to the best slogans. Entries to be submitted on an entry form available from the information stalls or emailed to environment-office@bristol.ac.uk. Closing date is Friday April 30th. By entering your slogan you agree for it to be used by the EEMU as part of their awareness raising campaign.
Environmental film festival
Supported by the Wild Screen Trust and the BBC. Short films including Kings of the Jungle and State of the Planet: Why is there a crisis? With the opportunity to meet some of the film makers.
Entry is free.

Energy Efficiency Advice Centre
By filling in a home energy survey available from the EEMU information stall, not only could you win a solar powered radio, but you'll find out how to save money in your home.
Free cycle training
Have you been thinking about cycling to the University but need more confidence to get on the road? Free cycle training, including help with planning your route, is available to University staff and students. Tuesday 16th March
Rethink Rubbish Giant Dustbin
Each year Bristol produces enough waste to cover the Downs knee deep! The Rethink Rubbish giant motorised dustbin will be outside the Hawthorns promoting waste minimisation. It's 4 metres high and 3 metres wide - you can't miss it!

Guided walk around Royal Fort Gardens: Plants and their history
Have you wondered what the Royal Fort Gardens contain, this is your chance to find out on a tour guided by the University's Grounds Services staff.
Time: 12:30pm (duration approximately 1 hour)
Venue: Meet by the security lodge at the entrance to Royal Fort Gardens
Wednesday 17th March
Guided lunchtime walk around Bristol - Canon's Marsh and Queen's Square
Use your lunchtime to take a brisk walk. Modern lifestyles mean that many of us don?t get as much exercise as we should. Regular exercise can substantially improve health and reduce stress.
Time: 12:30pm (duration approximately 30mins)
Venue: Meet guide at the Cascade Steps off St Augustine's Parade.

Thursday 18th March
Dr Bike
It's healthy, it helps you avoid the traffic, it's eco-friendly and on a bike you become the most energy efficient of all moving animals and machines! Bring your bike along to the Dr Bike session where mechanics will be available to carry out free bike safety checks, make minor repairs and adjustments and provide bike maintenance advice.

Can't Compost, Won't Compost?
Want to know how to compost, learn from the professionals - The University's Grounds Services will show you how.
Encouraging Wildlife Into Your Garden
Do you want birds or bats in your garden? Grounds Services will tell you how.
Time: 12.30pm (duration approximately 30mins)
Venue: Royal Fort Gardens
Lunchtime seminar on climate change - "Passion for the Planet - First steps for a low carbon future"
Interactive seminar on climate change run by Carbon Sense. A short, highly visual presentation on the reasons why we all bear responsibility for facilitating a move towards a low-carbon future. The presentation will be followed by a facilitated discussion to the explore the notion that quality, education, sustainability and low-carbon are synonymous and self-reinforcing.

Friday 19th March
Biodiversity Conservation: Tour of the Botanic Gardens with Nick Wray
Nick Wray curator at the Botanic Gardens will give a guided tour of the gardens, discussing the plants found there and the work the staff do on biodiversity.
Time: 1pm (duration approximately 1 hour 15 mins)
Venue: Meet up at the entrance to the Botanic Gardens, North Road.
