I joined the Bristol English Department in September 2007. Before coming here I was a Lecturer in the University of Liverpool from 1994, and a Research Fellow in Trinity College, Cambridge from 1991.

Research Interests

I have recently published articles on Alexander Pope, Emily Dickinson, Josephine Butler, Octavia Hill and Adrienne Rich, co-edited a book of essays on W.S. Graham and published a volume on the Rossettis in the Pickering and Chatto ‘Lives of Victorian Literary Figures’ series. At present I am writing a book on twentieth-century poetry and religious belief, and I would be very interested in supervising research in this area, in the wider relation between theology and literature or that of women’s writing.

Teaching

I teach a special subject unit ‘Twentieth-Century women writers’ and contribute to undergraduate core units ‘Literature 2’, ‘Approaches to Shakespeare’, ‘Approaches to Poetry’ and the MA ‘Modern and Contemporary Poetry’ pathway.
