Dr Laurence Publicover to supervise URC/IAS Interdisciplinary Research Internship
27 June 2017
Dr Laurence Publicover will supervise BA student Jack Sear for a URC/IAS Interdisciplinary Research Internship, together with Professor Mark Horton. Over the course of eight weeks this summer, Jack will work on the project Exploring Shipwrecks, which examines the ways in which poetic and archaeological understandings of shipwrecks have interacted with each other. Starting from literary representations of submerged ships, the project will analyse the ethical questions that arise when archaeologists explore shipwrecks, as well as the role of scientific discoveries and new technologies in cultural attitudes towards shipwrecks. This investigation of the legal and cultural ownership of the wreck will focus on Bristol-based ships, or ships recently departed from Bristol, with the help of local archives including the Bristol Record Office and the Bristol Central Library. The Department sends its warmest congratulations to Laurence and Jack on their award for this innovative project.
