Professor Pam King has been successful with a bid to WUN Research Development Fund for a project entitled 'Medieval Plays in Modern Performance: Capturing the Archive'. The sum is £14k in all, £7k from RDF, matched by £7k from the Theatre Collection and WUN Bristol. This will allow Pam, working with the Theatre Collection, to employ consultants to develop aspects of the project.
The programme will uncover the archives of the pioneering work of twentieth-century theatrical directors, the earliest of whom defied the censors to produce medieval plays for the first time since they were discontinued following the Reformation.
The archives in question are various, and include set and costume designs, scripts, correspondence, programmes, newspaper cuttings, photographs, and some sound and moving image material. On completion, the results will be disseminated through two workshops and a public exhibition.
