No. You will receive a course book which will support many of your lessons. All other required teaching/learning material will be provided.
When should I arrive?
You should arrange to arrive at your accommodation the day before your course begins. For more information about arrangements for arrival, please see the Accommodation Office website.
You will receive an email before the course starts. This email will contain instructions about registration day, which is the first day of the course. You must attend the pre-sessional registration day to become a fully registered student at the University of Bristol.
Is there a pick-up service from the airport to the University?
No, but there are good public transport facilities to Bristol by bus. The International Office has a very comprehensive website, detailing the various transport methods you can use to arrive at the University. The International Office runs a meet and greet service in September, at the start of the academic year. This does not run in the summer.
Please visit the National Express coach website for information on bus services from all the major international airports to Bristol.
If you arrive from Bristol Airport, there is a bus service, called the Bristol Flyer, available to take you to the city centre. A taxi will then be able to take you to your accommodation.
What other expenses will there be besides accommodation and food?
Travel to/from the airport
Buses from Heathrow or Gatwick to the Central Bus Station cost approximately £36. Please check the National Express website for more detailed information.
Buses from Bristol Airport to the Central Bus Station cost approximately £6. For more information on the Bristol International Flyer service, please see the Bristol Airport website.
Taxis from Central Bus Station to Woodland Court will cost approximately £8.
Learning materials
Learning materials are mainly provided by the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies, but you will need to buy stationery, printing and photocopying credits, etc.
What do I need to bring with me on the first day?
You will need to bring:
Your passport
The original copy of your IELTS or TOEFL certificate
Your printed certificate of online registration
A pen and paper
Your student number
Your home address
Contact details of an emergency contact. (An emergency contact is someone that we can contact in case of emergency. They need to be a relative who is responsible for you. Most students will choose their Mother or their Father. So please bring their telephone number, email address and home address information with you).
Do I have to do a test on the first day?
No, students will not take an English language test on the first day of the course.
