Introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language

    Students are not required to be native speakers of English, but do need to have a good level of English in order to take these units.

Introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) courses are available to University of Bristol home and international students (undergraduates only).

These 20-credit open units are offered twice a year:

Aims

TEFL 1 - LANG10120

This practical skills-oriented course will provide you with the basics needed to work effectively in an English Language classroom as an English teacher or language assistant. It will give you the knowledge and understanding of the language system, the skills and sub-skills which learners of English need to work on to be proficient users of English. The course is taught using the methodology of the ELT classroom - Communicative Language Teaching - and is therefore a very interactive, engaging and involved way to learn about the English language, and about ELT itself.

The principal aims of this unit are:

TEFL 2 - LANG10130

This course builds on the initial course, Introduction to TEFL 1, and deals with ELT skills and language systems in more depth. It also focuses on the skill of writing and how to teach it. There is major emphasis on lesson planning, and on evaluating, adapting or writing one's own materials and teaching them to real language learners in an authentic language classroom setting. These lessons are observed by an experienced teacher trainer and peers, with teaching practice feedback an integral part of the course, and participants' learning.
