The Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies is able to offer this course at a lower fee because students are taught by trainee teachers in the afternoon lessons only; all trainee teachers are observed and supervised throughout the duration of the course.

Aims

The course is designed for non-native speakers of English with a lower intermediate - upper intermediate level of English. The overall aim is to develop students' English language and communication skills for social, professional and academic purposes.

Content

The course is intensive, providing up to 21 hours of supervised work each week. Over half the lessons will be taught by fully qualified and experienced tutors and the remaining lessons will be taught by supervised teacher trainees. There are no more than 15 students in the language classes, with an average of around 12. The course will include:

A wide range of course books and audio-visual materials are available to course participants. The Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies has its own self-access facility with internet access, satellite TV, video and audio work stations. In addition, participants have access to the University libraries.

The Arts and Social Sciences Library is the main library building at the University of Bristol, and it is only a 2 minute walk from CELFS!

The International Librarian, Angela Joyce, is based in the Arts and Social Sciences Library.

Angela's web site for International Students is very useful. Angela arranges help sessions for international students to become familiar with the library. The web site includes information about how to book a help session, as well as collection details, video tutorials and useful external web site links.

For a small fee, summer students have access to the University Sports Centre.

There is also a programme of excursions and social activities with visits to places such as London, Bath and Oxford.
