Aims

The course is designed for non-native speakers of English with a lower intermediate - upper intermediate level of English. The overall aim is to develop students' English language and communication skills.

Content

The course is intensive, providing up to 21 hours of supervised work each week. In addition, students will be required to complete an individual portfolio of work to be presented at the end of the course. There are no more than 15 students in the language classes, with an average of around 12. The course will include:

Throughout the course, you will work on a project of your choice with other students in your class. The project will use all your language skills, grammar and vocabulary and will help you to extend and consolidate your knowledge and use of English both within and outside of the classroom. You will work both individually and in small groups and will need to speak and interact with people who are not in your class group and may even be members of the public. The final product of your project may take many forms, for example, a podcast, video, poster, written report, webpage and so on. This project work will be assessed.

A wide range of course books and audio-visual materials are available to course participants. The Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies has its own self-access facility with internet access, satellite TV, video and audio work stations. In addition, participants have access to the University libraries.

The Arts and Social Sciences Library is the main library building at the University of Bristol, and it is only a 2 minute walk from CELFS!

The International Librarian, Angela Joyce, is based in the Arts and Social Sciences Library.

Angela's web site for International Students is very useful. Angela arranges help sessions for international students to become familiar with the library. The web site includes information about how to book a help session, as well as collection details, video tutorials and useful external web site links.

For a small fee, summer students have access to the University Sports Centre.

There is also a programme of excursions and social activities with visits to places such as London, Bath and Oxford.
