English for Business and Professional Purposes
Essential information
This is a 20-credit course for post intermediate level students who wish to develop their English language knowledge and skills in business and professional contexts.
Aims
The principal aims of the course are:
- to develop grammatical competence, focusing on accuracy in the use of key linguistic structures, through analysis and practice in relevant areas of grammatical difficulty
- to develop the ability to deal with the production of effective written texts, focusing on linguistic features of widely occurring professional communication genres
- to develop the ability to operate with confidence in a number of widely occurring speech situations in the professional world
- to develop the ability to deal with authentic texts in English, with a particular focus on the interface between current affairs and the international business world
- to develop fluency in spoken English in a variety of settings, with a particular focus on participation in discussions and seminars, as well as social communication.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, learners should:
- have consolidated and reinforced their grammatical competence and lexical resources in a business context
- have attained a sounder grasp of the relationship between linguistic form and meaning, as well as a greater facility for dealing with contemporary professional discourse in English
- have enhanced their ability to operate effectively within key professional genres
- have attained a greater understanding of higher and lower level linguistic features of extended texts in the field
- have enhanced their ability to participate in the social communication characteristic of professionals in their everyday interactions.
Results
Students will be issued with a transcript in June by their home departments showing all their results, including their in-sessional English results. Provisional results can be provided for Erasmus students whose home University requires their results earlier.
