PhD student wins runner-up in prestigious competition in Beijing

Michael Baddeley, an EPSRC CDT PhD student and a member of the High Performance Network (HPN) Research Group at the University of Bristol’s Smart Internet Lab, has won 2nd place in the 2019 International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) Dependability Competition in Beijing, as part of a team from Toshiba Research Europe Ltd.

Michael’s team won 2nd place in both competition categories: Data collection monitoring and Dissemination of actuation commands.  Based on Michael's PhD work into Software Defined Networking in IoT, their solution uses Synchronous Flooding techniques to provide a configurable and programmable control plane for low-power wireless networks.  This award shows the leadership of the Smart Internet Lab both in SDN and IoT.

‌‌This highly competitive event benchmarks low-power wireless solutions through extensive, repeatable, and rigorous evaluation on a multi-hop mesh testbed, and their solution beat 12 other teams to win runner-up in both the data collection and data dissemination categories.

The EWSN (which took place between 25-27th February 2019) is a highly selective single-track international conference focusing on the latest research results on embedded systems and wireless networking.  This year, EWSN went outside Europe for the first time and was held in Beijing, China.

Michael said on winning the competition: "Going in to my thesis submission, this is a HUGE win for my PhD work and shows that SDN CAN be part of sensor networks, and low-power wireless IoT".

The High Performance Networks (HPN) Research Group at the Smart Internet Lab is led by Professor Reza Nejabati.  It specialises in the research of new hardware and software technologies, protocols and algorithms for high-speed, low latency, autonomous and programable networks.  The Group's work addresses the demands of the future network-based internet services in both fundamental academic research and industrial applications.
