Research summary

I work in the fields of smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity and systems engineering. My work in smart cities includes deployment of energy efficient wireless sensor networks, design of secure and resilient IoT applications, privacy in mobile computing, open data architectures for smart buildings, integration of industrial control systems and SCADA with the IoT etc. In general I am interested in how these technologies can be used to deliver a more sustainable future – both in terms of resource efficiency, resilience and of operational improvement.

Biography

I am a Reader in Smart Cities with a background in systems engineering, cybersecurity and software development. I teach across our undergraduate programmes of Engineering Design and Civil Engineering and the MSc Computer Science.

In the past I worked in industry as a programmer (Ulysses Systems), consultant and auditor (Ernst & Young) and after becoming an academic I provided on occasion expert witness advice, continuing professional development courses etc. My work has been focused on a diverse range of sectors including transportation, utilities, healthcare and government.
