Plagiarism
Virtual learning environments such as Blackboard allow students to easily and safely submit essays online. As well as helping to verify the number of words in an essay (thanks to the word count facility in Microsoft Word) the electronic version of an essay can be checked for plagiarism against documents from other students in the cohort and existing documents on the Internet.
JISC Plagiarism Detection Service
The University of Bristol is piloting the JISC plagiarism detection service. This checks work against an ever increasing volume of documents on the Internet including:
- A database of previously submitted material (i.e. other students essays and assignments).
- Over 4.5 billion url's.
- Copyright free material from the Gutenberg project.
- Selected subscription services.
The link at the bottom of this page takes you to the web site for the service which is based at Northumbria University. Once at the site, you can have a look at the demo of the service by clicking 'Detection Service Demo' (at the right of the screen under related information).
Please ignore the detection service registration section on their site. Instead, please visit the following page on the Education Support Unit pages http://www.bristol.ac.uk/esu/studentlearning/plagiarism/.
