We need a degree in a subject related to the one you wish to teach. You also need a minimum of Maths and English GCSE at Grade C or above. We do accept overseas qualifications but you would need to get confirmation through NARIC that these are equivalent to British qualifications. Please note, we do not offer or accept equivalency tests.
Please note that the PGCE at Bristol is extremely competitive; each application is considered on its own merits and a decision on whether to invite applications for interview is based on all the information supplied on the GTTR form.
Due to the volume of applications received by the University, we regret that it is not possible for us to enter into correspondence with unsuccessful applicants. In most cases, lack of success is due to the level of competition for places rather than any specific weakness in an application, and consequently, we will not be able to advise applicants on how to strengthen any subsequent application. There is no right of appeal and the decision will not be reviewed. However, concerns that the University's Admissions Principles and Procedures have been incorrectly implemented may be investigated under the Applicant Feedback and Complaints Procedures. Please see Feedback and Complaints for more information.
We accept the following overseas qualifications as equivalents of Maths and English GCSEs:
- 13 in maths and English at French Baccalaureat level
- 3 in maths and English at German Abitur level
- 6 in Maths and English at Spanish Bachillerato
Only in exceptional circumstances will marks below these be considered.
If you studied elsewhere, you would need to contact UK NARIC to obtain a statement of comparability
All applications are made online through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR) and are accepted from October in the year before the year of entry. You can make an application for 2012 now, but do be aware that we do not yet know how many places we will have on the course.
If you have a degree in an unrelated subject, you may be eligible to undertake an Enhancement Course. These typically run for six months from January in the year you would begin your PGCE. The first step is to make an application to the University of Bristol through GTTR; if eligible, we would refer you to the Enhancement Course provider and make you a conditional offer for the PGCE.
You need to keep an eye out on GTTR Track as this is the first place a decision will be recorded. If we want to invite you to interview, we will contact you giving you further details of what you need to do next. If invited for interview, you will need to come to Bristol and be interviewed in person.
No. This is an intensive, full-time course based in Bristol and at placement schools in the South-West and Wales.
The PGCE is a 36-week course; 24 weeks of this are spent on school placement.
Yes, you do. Even if you already have a disclosure (for a current job, for example), you need a new one for the University of Bristol.
It isn't possible to defer your offer. You would need to re-apply again in the new recruitment round.
The PGCE office can. Contact us by telephone on: 0117 331 4492 or by email on: ed-pgce@bristol.ac.uk
We look forward to hearing from you!
