Entry requirements
Applicants should normally hold a Masters degree from a United Kingdom university, or its equivalent. Those who already hold a research Masters Degree may apply for direct PhD registration. All others will normally be asked to apply in the first instance for the MPhil registration and, subject to satisfactory progress, will have the opportunity to be upgraded to candidature for the PhD.International applicants for the MPhil/PhD programme, whose first language is not English are required to achieve a score of at least 6.5 in IELTS or the equivalent (eg a minimum TOEFL score of 600 paper-based; 250 computer-based or 100 internet-based, with a score of at least 5 in the Test in Written English (TWE) ).
How to apply
Explore whether your proposed field of research is a 'good fit' with the GSoE research agenda. This will enable you to see whether there are people in the Graduate School of Education who are likely to be interested in supervising in your chosen field.
Research proposal (1,000 words)
In addition to the application form you are asked to provide a 1,000 word research proposal. This will be assessed according to the following criteria:
- Previous experience of the applicant;
- The quality of the proposal;
- The originality of the proposal;
- The content and coherence of the proposal;
- The methodology and methods;
- The applicant's references.
Scholarships and funding
You should indicate in your application form (section 6) whether you wish to apply for an ESRC Quota award (and/or other relevant funding). Please note: To apply for an ESRC scholarship you will need to already be accepted onto the MPhil/PhD programme.Deadline
We aim to admit all students to the MPhil/PhD programme in October each year so that they can benefit from the sequencing of the research training modules . There is no deadline for applications to this programme.Please note: in exceptional circumstances an offer may be considered for a January start.
Fees

Full-time students are required to pay the full-time student fee at the prevailing rate for a period of three consecutive years. Part-time students are required to pay the part-time student fee at the prevailing rate for a period of six consecutive years.
