Education Management pathway (Hong Kong)

Introduction to the EdD offered in Hong Kong

The Doctor of Education degree is offered in association with SCOPE at City University of Hong Kong, on a part-time basis taught face-to-face by University of Bristol staff.  The programme in Hong Kong offers senior educational professionals the opportunity to study for a UK doctorate entirely in Hong Kong, without having to interrupt their careers.  It is intended for senior educational professionals in different sectors of the education system whose work requires them to have a high level research and inquiry skills, enabling them to evaluate, implement, commission, design and administer research into many different aspects of educational provision, as well as to understand the policy implications of research.  The programme consists of taught units in Education Management and Research Methods and a dissertation of not more than 40,000 words.

Participants registered on the Bristol programme can also attend units in Hong Kong if it is more convenient for them and if there are spaces on units.

More information on the programme can be found on the SCOPE, City University of Hong Kong website here.

Duration

The modular structure enables participants to organise their studies according to the time they have available.  Each taught unit normally comprises a two and a half-day residential period.  Units are offered at different times across the calendar year and are not confined to University terms.  The minimum period of full-time study for the degree is three years.  Part-time participants may spread their study over a longer period if they wish (normally from four to seven years).

Assessment

Successful completion of the coursework components depends on attendance of at least 80% of sessions at each unit for which a participant is registered and submission, within three months of the end of a unit, of a 4,000 word assignment (or equivalent) which is graded as a “Pass”.  Participants must pass all eight units.

Dissertation

As well as eight units of coursework, the programme also requires the completion of a dissertation of no more than 45,000 words in length, which is examined by means of a viva voce with an internal and external examiner, in the same way as a PhD thesis.  Participants are allocated an advisor to guide their research for and writing of the dissertation.   Each completed dissertation must represent a contribution to knowledge which shows evidence of originality and independence, critical evaluation of the appropriate literature, research skills and the ability to communicate the results and their implications in clear English.  It is expected that the results of dissertations will be worthy of publication and participants are encouraged to publish.

Entry requirements

Candidates should hold a degree of a university of the United Kingdom or the CNAA or, subject to Senate’s approval, of any other university.  In addition, they will normally be expected to possess a Masters degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in education and to have had at least three years appropriate professional experience.
